RAKU POTTERY HOME PAGE

The delightful art of Raku is a visual treat and is attributed to Zen Buddhist Monks of 16th Century Japan. In that culture and time, Raku was much more than a method of making and firing pottery, it was a philosophy. The Japanese symbol for Raku can be translated as "enjoyment of freedom". We in the West have distilled Raku to a technical process. It is now generally accepted to mean a method of rapid firing and cooling of ceramic ware. Raku is not food safe! Raku is not water tight! Raku is fragile! Raku is also beautiful!

We feature raku vases, bowls, wall panels, raku heart-shaped boxes and raku mirrors from the following artists. As you can see, each artists tends to have their own color variations. Click on links below to view each individual's work.

7293 Roy Designs Large Raku Vase with Kokopelli Figure. A flat black and white Kokopelli figure decorates the Raku vase which has copper, gold, blue, green iridescent colors. 12 1/2" h. x 9 1/4"

7301A Roy Designs  Vase with Bear  Decoration.  This miniature pottery vase with blue, orange, green and copper colors is decorated with a bear. Not signed but an interesting piece.  5" h. x 2 7/8" d.

At the age of nine, Joyce knew that one day she would be an artist. She was awarded B.F.A. in sculpture from Kansas State University in 1975. After thirteen years in the commercial art world and 31 hours of post graduate work in clay, she made the full time commitment to pottery and in 1983 started the Clay Cellar in rural Kansas.
