| | A Word From the Sculptor....When sculpting the originals I use an American product called Super Sculpey. This starts as a soft compound. I might end up with three, sometimes four basic originals of each car. Creating cartoon style cars means the rulebook normally goes out of the window! As long as a few trusted friends of mine (all petrol heads) identify the car I’m working on in 0.98 of a second, I know I’m doing something right. Once I’m happy with the basic shape and the movement I’ve added, the car then gets heated in an oven, which hardens the compound. I then spray the car in a white primer and start sanding. Once everything is smooth and the basic details are correct I add all the window surrounds, wipers, mirrors etc. This is normally a mix of brass or plastic sheet and more Super Sculpey. So that’s roughly a month gone!
The car then gets cast in a marble resin and I get to start part two of the development. The painting. With about 95% of cars, I do use genuine car colors, usually aerosols. These plus a fair mix of acrylic artists paints and Pantone Tria graphic pens see most of the details completed. As with the sculpting process I might paint more that one idea at a time. Sometimes I’ll almost finish painting a car and get another better idea and start again.
Bases are worked out and drawn and then everything gets photographed. Normally two masters are created of each subject. One stays here. The other collects it’s passport, waves goodbye and flies off to the factory, where the cloning all takes place. So now you know. In all, about six weeks work probably goes into each car and that’s before it even gets to the factory. -Terry Ross (Used with permission) |
